Dak Lak province is renowned for its peaceful landscapes, gentle mountains and rivers, and lush green fields, making it the rice granary of South Central Vietnam. For hundreds of years, the province has also been associated with a national-level scenic spot: O Loan Lagoon, a brackish-water lagoon located south of Tuy An Bac Commune.
Overview of O Loan Lagoon
O Loan Lagoon is a brackish water lagoon situated east of National Highway 1, at the foot of Quan Cau Pass. The lagoon covers an area of over 17.5 km² and has an average depth of 1.2-1.4 meters; during the rainy season, it can reach 3 meters. The Cai River and several smaller rivers supply freshwater to the lagoon. A small stream connects the lagoon to the sea. Surrounding the lagoon are Dong Chay Mountain, Cam Mountain, and An Hai.
Beyond its unique physical beauty, O Loan Lagoon impresses with its serene, harmonious natural scenery, a blend of calm waters and surrounding mountain ranges. At dawn or dusk, the lagoon’s surface reflects golden light, creating a poetic natural landscape, perfect for sightseeing, relaxation, and photography.
Every year, on the seventh day of the first lunar month, the O Loan Lagoon boat-race festival is held, showcasing the folk culture of Dak Lak. O Loan Lagoon was recognized as a National Scenic Monument by the Ministry of Culture and Information on September 27, 1996.
Exploring O Loan Lagoon
O Loan Lagoon is a tranquil tourist destination in the central coastal region. Unlike larger beaches with vibrant entertainment, it attracts visitors with its gentle experiences, close to nature, and local life. One of the most enjoyable activities at O Loan Lagoon is rowing a boat or taking a small boat tour to explore the entire lagoon.
O Loan Lagoon is also an ideal place to explore the lives of local fishermen. Visitors can observe or directly participate in activities such as pulling nets and harvesting seafood. The lagoon is home to many valuable seafood species, such as grouper, crab, shrimp, king crab, scallops, etc., but the most delicious and famous is the blood cockle, with its thick, sweet, and fragrant meat – more fragrant than blood cockles from other places – a famous specialty that has become a culinary brand of the region.
Overall, O Loan Lagoon offers a relaxing, peaceful, and nature-friendly travel experience. It is a suitable destination for those who love tranquility, want to explore local culture, and enjoy the rustic yet captivating beauty of the central coastal region.
