The coastal area of Dak Lak is like a colorful painting with its “blue sea, white sand, and golden sunshine.” Not only does it boast stunning beaches that attract tourists, but this beloved region is also famous for the Da Dia Rapids – a natural masterpiece that is a highlight of any exploration of this land.
Overview of Da Dia Rapids
The Da Dia Rapids (Vietnamese: Gành Đá Đĩa or Gềnh Đá Đĩa; gềnh or gành meaning rapids) is one of the most unique natural landscapes along the central coast of Vietnam. It impresses with its structure of basalt rocks stacked on top of each other in regular hexagonal and pentagonal shapes, resembling a giant stack of plates arranged by human hands, but in reality formed entirely by natural geological processes millions of years ago.

Da Dia Rapids in Dak Lak Province
According to geologists, the Da Dia Rapids were formed by volcanic eruptions. When molten lava meets cold seawater, it quickly solidifies and contracts, forming cylindrical rock columns with characteristic polygonal cross-sections. Over time, under the influence of sea waves and wind, the rock layers are gradually exposed, stacked layer upon layer like plates, creating a landscape that is both majestic and harmonious. This near-perfect arrangement makes Da Dia Rapids a rare geological phenomenon not only in Vietnam but also worldwide.

It is estimated that there are about 35,000 rock columns, each 60 to 80 cm high. In the middle of the rapids, there is a small crack filled with rainwater and seawater, inside which are blue, red, purple, and yellow fish. Around the crack, rocks protrude at strange angles. Waves crash against the rocks, creating white foam. In front of the rapids, there is a large and deep cave. This cave can hold up to 100 people.

Visitors can visit Da Dia Rapids year-round, except on rainy days and during stormy seas. The rapids were designated a National Scenic Site in 1997 and elevated to a National Special Relic in 2020.
