General information about Hanoi Opera House
Hanoi Opera House is a theater project ranked as a National Monument, associated with important events of the Capital. The Opera House was started in 1901 by the French government in Vietnam, with the purpose of building a cultural and artistic center to serve entertainment requirements. The theater, completed after 10 years of construction, is an artistic masterpiece of architects Broyer, Harley and Francois Lagisquet, based on the model of the Opéra Garnier theater in Paris.
Hanoi Opera House is a project bearing the mark of classical European architecture, perfected in every detail, providing the most luxurious and academic art enjoyment space in Indochina. Since its inauguration, the French have organized many art programs to bring French culture to Vietnam. Popular art forms at that time were ballet, musicals, symphony concerts, pantomimes…
After 1945, the Opera House became a meeting place for the Government, the National Assembly and many military parades. Some Vietnamese theater troupes have also rented theaters as performance venues. With the formation of a new urban and intellectual class in Hanoi, the Opera House has become a vibrant artistic venue for Vietnamese writers and artists.
After the French withdrew their troops, the Vietnamese Government continued to preserve and develop the Hanoi Opera House according to its original function. At the end of the 20th century, the theater began to seriously deteriorate after more than 80 years of existence. The restoration project was conducted by the Vietnamese Government from 1995 to 1997, under the supervision of architect Ho Thieu Tri – a French-Vietnamese architect.
In 2011, Hanoi Opera House and August Revolution Square were recognized as national historical and architectural relics by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The Opera House is located at 1 Trang Thi Street, Trang Thi Ward, Hoan Kiem District, right at the August Revolution Square.

Unique architecture of the Hanoi Opera House
The Opera House was built on the prototype of the Opéra Garnier theater in Paris but on a smaller scale and using materials suitable for the climatic conditions in Vietnam. Visiting Hanoi Opera House, visitors will be amazed by an artistic masterpiece with an area of about 2,600 m², 87 m long, 30 m wide and the roof top is 34 m high above the road.
The facade of Hanoi Opera House impresses with its formal columns follow Ionic Roman style, the highlight is the curved roofs with exposed stone tiles. The curving curves of the balconies and arches highlight the Baroque element. The roof welcoming the entrance is oriented in the Art Nouveau style.
Above the theater is an extremely elaborate black stone tiled roof system, a combination of many different forms, bringing the feeling and spirit of French Neoclassicism. All of the above combinations have created a Neoclassical architectural work, not only of architectural value but also of unique decorative art.
The theater’s premises are divided into 3 distinct parts. The first area right at the entrance is the main hall with a T-shaped stone staircase leading to the 2nd floor.
The 2nd floor is the mirror room – where important ceremonies take place, signing Government documents or welcoming high-ranking figures. The floor is restored using mosaic tiles with imported Italian stone. Interspersed with large mirrors and beautiful crystal chandeliers hanging throughout the room, creating a solemn and splendid space.
The auditorium has an area of 24 x 24 m including a large stage, 3 tiers of seats with 598 seats in the classic French style of the 19th century. Located in the highest space, the auditorium is intricately designed. With Corinthian columns supporting a colorful frescoed dome. With embossed motifs and a magnificent gold-plated crystal chandelier.
This is where the perfect harmony between sound, light and color is created. Bringing a sophisticated and stylish space to enjoy art.
Behind the stage are 2 rehearsal rooms, 18 makeup rooms for actors and functional rooms such as meeting rooms, offices, libraries…
