The largest cave in Ninh Binh, Van Trinh Grotto, lies peacefully on the side of Mo Mountain. Set amid a charming landscape of mountains and rivers, with a clear view straight out to the wild, overlapping mountains, the grotto is the perfect destination for those who want to fully explore the natural beauty of Vietnam.
Overview of Van Trinh grotto
Van Trinh Grotto is located in Mo Mountain, in Thuong Hoa village, Thanh Son commune. This is a large cave, along with Thien Ha Cave, Tien Ca Cave, and Vai Gioi Cave, which are the most beautiful caves in Ninh Binh. Along with Kenh Ga hot spring, Van Trinh has been included in the planning of the construction and exploitation of the Kenh Ga – Van Trinh tourist area by the Ninh Binh Tourism Department.

The grotto is located in a mountain over a hundred meters high. The entrance is halfway up the mountain, about 40 m above ground level. Tourists on a tour to visit the cave will go by boat from Hoang Long River Wharf. From Ninh Binh city, you can go to the grotto along Trang An avenue, from Ky Lan lake through the Trang An eco-tourism area and Bai Dinh pagoda, to the grotto.
Exploring Van Trinh grotto – A magical maze between Ninh Binh’s land and sky
From the foot of Mo mountain, you follow the mountainside, climb about 80 steps to reach the entrance, which is not too large, only about 1.5 m high and only 1 m wide. However, from the moment you step through the cave entrance into the grotto, definitely be surprised by the impressive scenery here.

The grotto floor is relatively flat, but is covered with countless stalactites in various shapes, such as lamps, candles, lions, eagles, tigers, turtles…
If you look closely, you will easily see a skylight at the top of the cave, also known as the “heavenly eye”. Next to it are nooks and crannies dotted with small, round stones like duck eggs, chicken eggs, marbles, beans, and rice grains.

Deep inside the grotto, it is divided into two small caves and separated by a stalactite screen wall nearly 7m high. On the wall are various shapes such as clouds, mountains, and rivers. On the right side of the grotto wall is an impressive system of stalactites, many of which resemble someone dancing and singing; there is even a wide path down to the underworld. Deep inside the cave is a well with water flowing from below. The air in the cave is relatively cool and pleasant.

The most spiritual value in Van Trinh Cave is the stone stalactite protruding in the shape of a man’s “genitals”, located opposite a small hole called “the birth door”. Local people who are infertile often touch and crawl through that door to pray for luck.

Not many people realize that, besides a series of extremely attractive tourist attractions in Ninh Binh, this land is also fortunate to have a Van Trinh Grotto with an impressive system of stalactites in various shapes. Therefore, don’t forget to come to the grotto to discover the secrets of nature and enjoy the fresh air of the countryside.
