The Mother Thu Monument, also known as the Monument to the Heroic Vietnamese Mothers, is a memorial of profound historical and humanistic significance, located in the Tam Ky area (formerly in Quang Nam Province, now part of the Da Nang region). The monument was built to honor the “Heroic Vietnamese Mothers” who sacrificed their personal happiness and endured immense loss for the sake of the nation’s independence and freedom.

History and Significance of the Mother Thu Monument

The monument is modeled after the Heroic Vietnamese Mother Nguyen Thi Thu (1904–2010), a native of Dien Thang Trung Commune, Dien Ban Town, in the former Quang Nam Province (currently An Thang Ward, Da Nang City). She stands as a symbol of supreme sacrifice, having lost nine sons, a son-in-law, and two grandsons during the nation’s resistance wars.

The monument does not merely commemorate Mother Nguyen Thi Thu; it represents the thousands of mothers across Vietnam who made great sacrifices and suffered profound losses during wartime. It serves as a place for today’s generations to express their gratitude and to learn about the nation’s history and patriotic traditions.

Unique Architecture of the Mother Thu Monument

The monument complex spans approximately 15 hectares and was inaugurated on March 24, 2015. Designed by artist and sculptor Dinh Gia Thang and architect Nguyen Luan, the monument is notable for seamlessly integrating monumental sculpture with a vast surrounding landscape.

The monument is hollow; inside the statue is the Vietnamese Heroic Mother Memorial House, with an area of 400 m², and a stele listing nearly 50,000 heroic Vietnamese mothers across the country, introducing the image, life, and dedication of the Mother to the Fatherland. Inside the 78 m-long sandstone block is the museum of Vietnamese heroic mothers, covering 397 m² and including a gallery, living room, and preservation area.

On both sides of the monument are two large flower carpets covering 600 m², decorated with motifs representing the nuances of 54 ethnic groups living in Vietnam. The main monument block is also attached to a large lake, about 1,000 m². Behind the monument is a large lawn and a rock garden. In addition, the monument complex includes 8 legendary pillars, each 9 meters high, with an average diameter of more than 1.2 meters, made of sandstone and engraved with the merits of mothers.

The monument’s most striking feature is the stone-carved portrait of the mother, whose expression is gentle and contemplative, with her gaze fixed forward. Flanking the central figure are expansive stone structures that evoke a mother’s arms, embracing and sheltering the nation’s children.

Mother Thu Monument

The Mother Thu Monument is more than an architectural landmark; it invites a deeper understanding of the losses endured during wartime and the value of the peace we enjoy today. Amidst the vast expanse of Cam Mountain, the image of a mother with her arms outstretched serves as a poignant reminder of maternal love, patriotism, and the quiet sacrifices made by Vietnamese women
