When observing that there were quite a lot of birds flying back and forth, the managers had the idea of establishing a bird garden to gather them, enriching the collection of flora and fauna. By many methods of attracting, the birds have been attracted to live and reproduce until now.

Formed since 1995 until now, the bird garden has been cared for, maintained, and preserved. This place has a system of green trees, developed vegetation, good density of green trees and coverage.

In addition to promoting the potential of a famous tourist destination, the bird garden also serves the purpose of studying, researching, and visiting to meet the spiritual needs of society, especially the love of nature, raising awareness of environmental protection, and protection of wild animals and plants.

An “unique” bird garden

What is especially interesting is that visitors can drink coffee in the ward center while watching flocks of wild birds fly out to find food early in the morning.

At first, the Lam Vien 19/5 bird sanctuary had a forest of about 2 hectares, which became bustling every afternoon with thousands of birds and storks flying back, and gradually other bird species such as whistling duck, common teal also came here to make shelter and breed. Not only for birds, it was a home of other typical creatures of mangrove forests, including crocodiles, snakes, iguanas, pythons, and tortoises.

To meet the needs of the growing number of “feathered residents”, the park expanded the forest to 6 hectares including a pond and a forest of many leafy trees, and dense trees along the lake, creating conditions for the birds to gather and develop, while also fencing off a separate ecological area to protect the birds and the landscape, built cages and organized “decoys” to attract more birds.

Since then, the bird garden has been preserved, conserved, and developed by many generations. Although Ca Mau is increasingly developing, the noise of the ward center and the bird garden still exist, birds still come to live and breed, the garden has become a valuable feature of a city at the southernmost tip of the country.

The time of departure and return of these species also depends on the weather. Particularly, the herons go out to feed at night, when the sun has just set (18 – 19:30) and return early, around 4:30 to 6:20.

The remaining species mostly only forage during the day and do not go far, only hanging around the garden (storks, cuckoos, striped waterfowl, geese, wild chickens, etc.) or in the museum grounds (starlings, penguins, kingfishers, etc.). The Lam Vien 19/5  bird sanctuary is an attractive and unique eco-tourism destination of a wildlife reserve in Ca Mau.
