Am Phu Cave is located at the southern foot of Thuy Son Mountain, in the Ngu Hanh Son scenic spot, Da Nang. This is one of the area’s most distinctive caves, not only for its deep, dark natural structure but also because its interior reflects Eastern concepts of cause and effect, reincarnation, and good and evil in culture and Buddhism.

Overview of Am Phu Cave

According to survey results, Am Phu Cave is about 302 m long, and the cave dome can reach 45–50 m high in some locations. The cave includes many nooks, paths, and spaces at different heights. The deeper you go, the more natural light decreases, creating a dark and mysterious atmosphere – also one of the factors associated with the name “Hell”.

On the way, visitors will pass through Am Duong Bridge, also known as Nai Ha Bridge, which spans the area and symbolizes the Vong Xuyen River. Next are the images of Nam Tao and Bac Dau, characters appearing in folk beliefs.

Deeper inside are also Phan Quan, Minh Vuong Palace, Avici Prison, Giai Oan Stream, and many images depicting the process of judging good and evil.

One important spiritual figure here is Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. In Buddhist thought, he embodies compassion and works to save sentient beings suffering in the lower realms. The Ksitigarbha statue is worshiped in the cave, and the site also hosts activities related to the Vu Lan (Ghost Festival) filial piety ceremony.

Am Phu Cave

The most interesting point of Am Phu Cave is that the journey is divided into two directions with symbolic meaning. One path leads to Heaven, with a higher, brighter route symbolizing the results of living a good life. The other direction goes deeper into areas symbolizing hell, where the consequences of bad actions are recreated. This layout promotes good and discourages evil, rather than simply creating fear.

Am Phu Cave

Beyond its spiritual significance, Am Phu Cave also holds two memorial steles related to battles in the area during the war, adding another layer of historical value.

Am Phu Cave

With a combination of natural caves, Buddhist beliefs, folk beliefs, and history, Am Phu Cave offers a very different experience than Huyen Khong or Tang Chon Cave. This is not simply a journey to explore a cave, but also a place where visitors can learn how ancient Vietnamese people envisioned cause and effect, life, death, and the value of doing good.
