Located in the western mountains of Quang Ngai province, Ngoc Linh Mountain is one of Central Vietnam’s highest and richest mountainous areas. Belonging to the Truong Son range, the Ngoc Linh massif has an altitude of over 2,600 m above sea level and has long been mentioned as one of the “roofs” of the Central Highlands – Central region.
Overview of Ngoc Linh Mountain
This is a completely different world from the image of islands and seas often associated with Quang Ngai. If Ly Son impresses with volcanoes and blue sea, then Ngoc Linh offers a Quang Ngai of high mountains, old forests, a cool climate, and indigenous communities that have lived for a long time along the Truong Son range.

What makes Ngoc Linh special is its high-mountain terrain and natural forest landscape. In high areas, high humidity and cool climate create dense green forests, often covered with clouds and dew. Successive mountain slopes, deep valleys, and spreading forests create a landscape that is both wild and majestic. According to information from Quang Ngai province, the Western Truong Son area has a cool climate, high humidity, and heavy rainfall, creating favorable conditions for the forest ecosystem and for many medicinal species to develop.
According to biodiversity research, Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve has 14 types of forest vegetation across 3 altitude belts (tropical, subtropical low mountains, subtropical medium mountains). Among them, the dominant subtropical low-mountain vegetation is outstanding, with subtropical closed forests in the medium mountains at an altitude of 1,800 m-2,600 m and a thick layer of rotten carpet. This special condition allows rare and endemic species of flora and fauna in Vietnam to grow, such as Ngoc Linh ginseng (Panax Vietnamensis) and Ngoc Linh babbler (Garrulax Ngoclinhensis). It is a convergence of 1,091 species of higher plants, of which up to 40 species are in the Vietnam Red Book, and 25 species are in the World Red List. The Mammal Fauna records 91 species belonging to 28 families; 24 species are in the Vietnam Red List, and 22 species are in the World Red List.
Beyond its majestic mountains and forests, the area is also famous for its unique ecosystem and Ngoc Linh ginseng (Panax vietnamensis), a precious medicinal species associated with this mountainous region.
Another factor that makes Ngoc Linh attractive to international tourists is the culture of the Xo Dang community. The Xo Dang people have lived around the Ngoc Linh mountain area for many generations, building a life closely tied to forests, fields, and native medicinal resources. So exploring Ngoc Linh is not only a journey to learn about nature but also a chance to experience a mountainous cultural space unlike Vietnam’s urban areas or coastal resorts.
The best time to conquer this mountain peak is during the dry season, from December to March of the following year. However, Ngoc Linh Mountain is located in a special-use forest that is strictly protected by rangers, so if you want to trek Ngoc Linh Mountain, you need to apply for a permit from the authorities. The road to the top is quite difficult, so to stay safe, visitors should hire a local guide familiar with the terrain.
