Nearly 1,000-year-old craft village
Vi Khe ornamental plant village (located in Vi Khe Ward, Ninh Binh Province) is a traditional craft village that has been around for more than 800 years and is known as the ancestral land of ornamental in Vietnam. Here, each tree is a work of art that is carefully shaped, trimmed, and cared for.
According to historical documents preserved by the locality, in 1211, the high-ranking general of the Ly Dynasty, To Trung Tu, came here to live and work. In addition to agricultural development, he taught the local people the art of growing flowers and ornamental plants to earn a living. From then on, the Vi Khe people’s flower and ornamental plant-growing profession has taken shape and continues to develop to this day, with nearly 700 households practicing it.
Hundreds of years ago, every spring, the kings usually held contests to select the most beautiful ornamental plants. Many Vi Khe residents won high prizes. Therefore, Vi Khe village has become famous among flower and plant lovers.
The village of “strange flowers and rare herbs.”
On the road leading to the village, on both sides are two rows of lush green trees with all kinds of trees, each tree has its own style of the gardener. The trees, with different shapes and positions, are meticulously pruned.
To create a beautiful ornamental, the artisan must spend several years caring for a simple tree; it takes more than ten years for a tree with a complex shape and position. With meticulous care and perseverance, it takes many years for a bonsai to achieve a beautiful shape. Then, the artisans skillfully shaped the molds into the forms of birds, animals, the One Pillar Pagoda, Khue Van Cac, Pho Minh Tower…
With skillful, talented hands, the people of Vi Khe pay close attention to cultivating a variety of flowers and bonsai trees with high artistic, aesthetic, and economic value. Vi Khe is considered the homeland of many flowers, such as camellias, orchids, peach, rhododendrons… Hundreds of other flower species are also grown here, such as chrysanthemums, dahlia, gerbera… But for the Kumquat tree, Vi Khe is considered the original kumquat village in Vietnam.
In Vi Khe today, every house has a beautiful flower garden and bonsai with brilliant colors of green, red, purple, yellow, … of flowers, along with tree shapes and forms that have high aesthetic and economic value, such as ficus benjamina, podocarpus macrophyllus, banyan, ficus racemosa,…
Many types of tree shapes and forms are created by artisans in the village, reaching a sophisticated, sharp level with high artistic value. At its peak, Vi Khe had a bonsai set worth billions of VND.
Many types of bonsai from Vi Khe have been displayed and participated in exhibitions at home and abroad, winning high awards, and flowers and ornamental plants from Vi Khe have also won high awards. Every year, hundreds of domestic and international delegations come to Vi Khe to visit, study, and buy flowers and ornamental plants.
Currently, ornamental plants from Vi Khe have been transported to all parts of the country to beautify the homeland and create a green, clean, beautiful environment, as well as exported to China, Laos, Cambodia, etc.
