Previously, Phong Nam ancient village was a southern part of Phong Le village. Phong Le village has a large area established during the Champa period. The village has gone through many historical periods with many name changes. Some of the secondary names that still remain are Phong Le and Da Ly.
According to the village chief of Phong Nam, in the past Phong Nam was only a southern part of the large Phong Le village covering Phong Bac (Hoa Tho Dong ward, Cam Le district) and Phong Nam village (Hoa Chau commune, Hoa Vang district) now. Although the surrounding villages have changed rapidly due to urbanization, Phong Nam still retains the characteristics of a traditional Vietnamese village.

Prominent ancient houses include the family homes of Ms. Ong Thi Mang, Mr. Tran Ngoc Duat, Ngo Viem and Le Duc Duc, Ngo Thi Trinh.
In particular, Phong Nam village also preserves the ancient temple – named Thai Giam, built in the stilt house architecture that is said to have been more than 500 years ago. The temple was built with 4 rosewood pillars, covered with thatch, then built with lime mortar, yin-yang tiles, and ancient moss over time. According to the elders, the Thai Giam temple is the only one of the “four temples” of the ancient Phong Nam village that still exists.
Phong Nam also preserves and maintains the Muc Dong Festival – honoring buffalo herding children at Than Nong communal house. Than Nong communal house, also known as Muc Dong communal house, was formed at the end of the reign of Emperor Tu Duc (1848 – 1883). The communal house has a structure with 3 parts connected together from the outside to the inside. There is a front hall and a back hall formed of 5 rooms.
On the 6 rows of pillars in the pavilion, there are hanging parallel sentences engraved with Chinese words, painted in red and gilded with gold. Those are the compliments of famous people Phan Boi Chau and Cao Ba Quat during their visits to the communal house. The middle space worships Shennong, the founder of agriculture, who helps villagers pray for good weather. The left side worships the ancestors of the right who openly cultivated, and settled, and the right side worships the predecessors of the Muc Dong.
