Bui Hui Grassland

Nestled amid the mountains of western Quang Ngai, the Bui Hui Grassland remains one of Central Vietnam’s natural destinations, preserving its pristine, peaceful beauty. Free from large-scale tourism developments or modern resorts, Bui Hui captivates visitors with its vast grassy hills, rolling mountain ranges, fresh air, and the unique culture of the Hre ethnic community.

Overview of Bui Hui Grassland 

The Bui Hui Grassland (Vietnamese: thảo nguyên Bùi Hui; thảo nguyên means grassland) is located in the mountainous Ba To region, approximately 60–70 km from the center of Quang Ngai. At an elevation of about 700 meters above sea level, the area enjoys a relatively cool climate, especially in the early mornings and at night. The journey to Bui Hui takes travelers from the lowlands deep into the mountains, along winding roads that pass through forests, valleys, and villages scattered across the hillsides.

Upon reaching the plateau, the landscape shifts dramatically. Visitors are greeted by expansive grasslands stretching across the hills, with mountain ranges unfolding in the distance. The open space and lack of built structures create an airy atmosphere, offering a welcome escape from the bustle of urban centers and coastal tourist hubs.

One of the most cherished experiences at Bui Hui is “cloud hunting” and watching the sunrise. On days with favorable weather, the valleys below are often blanketed in layers of white clouds and mist in the early morning. From higher vantage points, visitors can watch the clouds drift between the peaks in the soft light of dawn. This scenery makes Bui Hui a compelling destination for photography enthusiasts, campers, and outdoor travel lovers.

Afternoon brings a different kind of beauty. Sunlight washes over the grassy slopes, temperatures mellow, and a serene quiet settles over the landscape. As night falls, Bùi Hui’s remote location—far from urban centers and free from significant light pollution—makes it an ideal spot to enjoy the night sky and the fresh mountain air.

A destination for nature lovers

With its vast grassy hills and largely unspoiled landscape, Bui Hui is perfect for camping, hiking, cloud-hunting, sunrise viewing, photography, and experiencing local life. Instead of rushing through a packed itinerary of tourist attractions, visitors can take their time strolling across the grassy slopes, admiring the mountain scenery, or pitching a tent for the night.

One of the highlands’ defining features is its natural rose myrtle hills. In summer, purple rose myrtle blossoms bloom across the slopes, interspersed with green grass and mountain foliage. The purple hues soften the landscape, lending it romantic charm and making it one of the best times of year to visit.

Beyond its natural beauty, Bui Hui holds cultural significance as the ancestral home of the Hrê people, one of Quang Ngai’s prominent indigenous ethnic groups. The Hrê’s traditional lifestyle is deeply connected to the mountains, forests, farmlands, and village community. This cultural heritage is reflected in their housing, traditional attire, cuisine, festivals, handicrafts, and folk music. Notably, the gong, a percussion instrument, has been recognized as National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Thus, a trip to Bui Hui offers more than just sightseeing; it provides an opportunity to gain insight into the cultural life of the mountainous region of Quang Ngai.
