She was born in Hanoi in 1942 and graduated from Hanoi Medical University in 1966. After graduating, she volunteered to go to the South, working on the battlefield in Duc Pho, Quang Ngai. Despite a lack of medicines and medical equipment, she and her colleagues cared for wounded soldiers and local civilians in field clinics hidden within the mountains and forests. Dang Thuy Tram made the ultimate sacrifice in 1970 at the age of 27.

Her story gained worldwide recognition thanks to the diaries she kept while working in Quang Ngai. After her death, an American soldier, Frederic Whitehurst, preserved the diary pages rather than destroying them. More than three decades later, the diary was returned to her family in Vietnam and subsequently published as “Dang Thuy Tram’s Diary”. It became a literary phenomenon with more than 400,000 copies sold. The book has been translated into many languages ​​and commented on by the foreign press as “Vietnam’s Anne Frank Diary”.
