Dinh Tien Hoang Temple has long been a famous tourist destination in Ninh Binh. Upon arriving here, you will have the opportunity to look back at the nation’s heroic history and admire its majestic ancient beauty.
Overview of the Dinh Tien Hoang Temple
The temple is located in the center of the Eastern citadel of the ancient capital, Tay Hoa Lu Ward. This is the only place in Vietnam that worships King Dinh Tien Hoang, his parents, and his sons, and has tablets to worship the generals of the Dinh dynasty. Dinh Temple, along with the nearby Le Dai Hanh Temple, is ranked among the “Top 100 famous 100-year-old works in Vietnam”. Like other relics of the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, King Dinh Temple is located in the Trang An World Heritage Complex, recognized by UNESCO in 2014.

Every year, on the 8th day of the 3rd lunar month, visitors from all over the world flock to the temple to pay homage and participate in the festival. During this time, the weather is also mild; the dry season brings light sunshine and relatively cool temperatures, suitable for exploring Ninh Binh.

Unique architectural art of Dinh Tien Hoang Temple
The Dinh Temple was built in the 17th century and is located in the cluster of historical relics of the ancient capital of Hoa Lu. The place of worship for King Dinh Tien Hoang comprises 3 main buildings: the worship hall, the incense-burning house, and the main palace. The temple was built in the style of a pagoda, with two long corridors connecting the front house to the back house, forming a rectangular frame that surrounds the architectural works in the middle.

In front of the central room of the worship hall, right in the dragon yard, is a “dragon bed” made from a single block of green stone, combined with extremely delicate carvings with unique and valuable patterns. This is considered a valuable gift, while also showcasing the artistic talent of the Vietnamese during this period.

From the dragon yard, step up to the 5-room worship hall, a unique architecture. Behind the dragon bed is the shrine of King Dinh Tien Hoang. The shrine has two parts: the worship hall and the main palace. The worship hall is for the communal altar. On the altar is a beautifully carved incense table, belonging to the 17th century.

Next is the incense burner, a tube-shaped architecture, where the four loyal mandarins of the Dinh Dynasty are worshiped, including Nguyen Bac, Dinh Dien, Trinh Tu, and Luu Co.
The middle room worships the statue of King Dinh Tien Hoang, cast in bronze and placed on a monolithic green stone altar. On both sides of the stone altar are two dragons, carved in the style of a horse saddle.

The right room worships the statues of Crown Prince Hang Lang and Dinh Toan, the king’s two second sons, both facing north. The left room worships the statue of Dinh Lien, the king’s eldest son, facing south.

Dinh Temple is a unique architectural work of Vietnamese folk art in wood carving, dating to the 17th century.

The Dinh Tien Hoang Temple is also a unique work of art with many rare and precious artifacts preserved, such as Buddhist pillars engraved with Sanskrit characters, contemporary inscribed palace bricks and steles…
