Overview of Monkey Island, Cat Ba

Monkey Island is known as a tourist highlight of the city of “red phoenix flowers” – the nickname of Hai Phong city. This island is located in the south of Lan Ha Bay, in the Cat Ba archipelago, and is only about 2km from Cat Ba town. This place is about 60km from the center of Hai Phong, equivalent to nearly 1 hour by car.

Monkey Island has an area of only about 3km in circumference and has many wild pineapples that people use to soak in drinking water and dry to make medicine, so it is called Cat Dua (wild pineapples) Island.

Later, the Hai Phong Forest Protection Department brought more than 20 monkeys to the island to raise and release them in the wild, and local people gradually called this place Monkey Island. Nowadays, most people know this place as Monkey Island, Cat Ba.

How to get here?

To get to Monkey Island, visitors will have to take a boat from Beo wharf for about 10 minutes through Cai Beo fishing village, pass several small islands, and then reach the island. For tourists traveling from Hanoi, visitors will have to book a car from Hanoi to Beo wharf and take a boat to Monkey Island, or book a car to the ferry terminal, then take a speedboat for about 5 minutes to Cat Ba town, and then move to Beo wharf to take a boat to Monkey Island.

The way to travel depends on which car company visitors choose, or you can book a Cat Ba tour for more convenient travel for tourists traveling in groups or families with small children.

Explore Monkey Island, Cat Ba

Monkey Island is only about 3km in circumference, with a mountainous structure and a sandy beach stretching for kilometers in an arc. The beach on Monkey Island is divided into 2 beaches: Cat Dua 1 and Cat Dua 2. Cat Dua 1 has a longer beach; there is also a military barracks here, an ideal destination for tourists.

When coming to Monkey Island in Cat Ba, the first thing that many tourists love to do is swim at Cat Dua 1 beach. This is also the main beach on Monkey Island, with a long coastline and a wide, clear sea that mirrors the diverse biological world beneath the ocean.

Cat Dua 2 beach is on the right side, hidden behind a tiger-shaped mountain. Here, there is a large garden with trees such as wild pineapple, white apple tree, banyan tree… and many other types of birds. Tourists who like to explore can also climb to the top of the mountain to see the whole island and, from afar, admire Lan Ha Bay and the small islands.

On Monkey Island, there are also entertainment services for tourists, such as kayaking and BBQ parties. There are also cool huts for tourists to lie in the sun, watch the sea, eat, and rest with family and friends.
