Cat Ba is an archipelago comprising approximately 366 islands of varying shapes and sizes. The main island is Cat Ba, located 30 nautical miles from Hai Phong. The area’s topography consists of limestone mountains with many grottoes and caves, as well as beaches with white, powdery sand.

What’s the best time to explore Cat Ba?

Summer is the ideal time to travel to Cat Ba. From April to October, the weather is cool, suitable for relaxation and swimming. The peak season is from May to July.

If you plan to go to the island from July to August, visitors should pay attention to the weather forecast three to five days in advance to ensure there are no storms. From November to March, the island is quite deserted. However, this time is ideal for exploring nature and relaxing.

How to get here?

From Hanoi, you can travel along the Hanoi – Hai Phong Expressway, through the Tan Vu sea bridge to Cat Hai district, Hai Phong city. From this location, you can travel to Cat Ba Island in the following ways.

Ferry

Dong Bai Ferry is a new ferry terminal that replaces the Got Ferry Terminal, 3 km away. This terminal operates from 5:30 am to 18:30 pm every day. The last trip from Cai Vieng wharf to Dong Bai Ferry will depart at 18:00 pm. On peak days, the ferry terminal will arrange to increase the number of trips and ferries.

The ferry crossing time will be about 30 minutes to 1 hour, and the ticket prices are 12,000 VND for pedestrians, 45,000 VND for motorbikes, and 190,000 VND for cars with fewer than 9 seats.

Cable car

The cable car terminal is located in the old Got Ferry area. Cable car tickets cost about 100,000 VND per trip; children under 1 meter are free. The cable car will be closed every Tuesday (except holidays and Tet).

The cable car will operate according to the following schedule: 9:00 – 9:15, 10:00 – 10:15, 11:00 – 11:15, 13:30 – 13:45, 14:30 – 14:45, and 15:30 – 15:45.

Moving on to Cat Ba Island

Leaving the ferry terminal, visitors will travel about 20 km more to reach the center of Cat Ba Island. The road is beautiful, coastal, and through Cat Ba National Park. If you do not use personal vehicles, visitors can travel by bus, taxi, or other private rental vehicles.

In the center of Cat Ba, visitors can choose from electric cars (10,000 VND per person per trip), taxis (metered), motorbike taxis, or other private rental vehicles.

Cai Beo Ancient Fishing Village

Trung Trang Cave

This place also contains archaeological sites of the ancient Vietnamese.
