The Mat Than Mountain (Vietnamese: núi Mắt Thần, means God’s Eye mountain – a name that evokes so much mystery and magic is given to a mountain located in the valley of Ban Danh hamlet, Quoc Toan commune, Tra Linh district, Cao Bang province.
The Mat Than Mountain is nestled in the valley between the Thang Hen lake complex of Cao Bang Non Nuoc Geopark, where an extremely charming landscape with immense grasslands next to vast blue lakes stretching across the sky. According to the local Tay people, the Mat Than Mountain has the local name “Phja Piot”, which translates to a mountain with a hole, drilled through as if to let the wind blow through from one side to the other. This is a unique mountain in Vietnam.
The official document, which has been assessed and promulgated by leading experts from the Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment), as well as leading international experts from the Global Geopark Network, clearly states: “Mat Than Mountain” is actually a circular hole with a diameter of more than 50m, located at an altitude of about 50m above the lake surface (Thang Hen).
The cave is at its current height due to uplift during the Neotectonic period. The cave develops in a tower-shaped limestone terrain at a general altitude of about 650-700m, including tower-shaped and cone-shaped mountain blocks interwoven with dozens of large and small lakes, together creating the Thang Hen lake system”.
With such poetic natural beauty, this place has become one of the new destinations loved by young people recently and has been given the name “Tuyet Tinh valley” – a remote place with stunningly beautiful scenery.
The inherent natural beauty of Mat Than mountain is preserved intact all year round. In the dry season, September and October, this place is preferred by many backpackers. At this time, the legendary Thang Hen lake is often drained in a few hours. Opening up the poetic and charming natural scenery of Nam Tra fall.
Mat Than mountain is about 50km from Cao Bang city, visitors can travel here by car or motorbike, both are convenient. However, motorbike is a convenient means of transportation as the final stretch of road leading to Mat Than mountain is quite narrow, only motorbikes can move deep inside the valley.
