Overview of To Vo Arch

To Vo Arch is a natural volcanic rock arch, located on the western side of Cu Lao Re (Big Island), near Duc Pagoda and not far from the island’s center. Visitors can easily reach the site by motorbike or electric car. From a distance, the stone arch stands out against the backdrop of the sea, resembling a “wasp’s nest” (in the local language, Tò Vò means wasp). Standing approximately 2.5 meters high and 9 meters long, it is modest in size but boasts a distinctive shape and was formed almost entirely by nature.

The formation of To Vo Arch is tied to Ly Son’s geological history. Millions of years ago, volcanic activity created layers of lava across the island. As the lava cooled and solidified, volcanic rock formations emerged. Over a long period, the relentless action of waves, wind, rain, and weathering eroded the softer rock, leaving behind the harder rock that forms the arch’s current shape. This prolonged natural process transformed To Vo Arch into a unique geological feature of this volcanic island.

The surrounding landscape also adds to the site’s allure. Dark volcanic rock formations of various shapes and sizes line the coast. At low tide, rock layers emerge from the water, creating small pools that reflect the sky. From the natural stone arch, visitors can gaze out at the sea, watch fishing boats, and experience the simple, unhurried pace of life of the island’s residents.

The To Vo Arch is renowned as one of the best spots on Ly Son Island to watch the sunset. In the late afternoon, as the sun descends toward the horizon, the light shifts to golden-orange hues that shimmer across the water. From the right vantage point, visitors can view the sun framed perfectly within the stone arch, creating a striking scene.

Beyond the sunset, the early morning is also an ideal time to explore the area. The air is cool, crowds are thinner, and the soft light allows visitors to fully appreciate the peaceful beauty of the seascape. At low tide, one can walk along the surrounding rocky shores to get a closer look at the volcanic rock formations; however, caution is advised as the rock surfaces can be slippery or sharp.

To Vo Arch is part of a recognized scenic site in 2025, with a total protected area of ​​26,000 square meters; the gate structure itself covers over 420 square meters, comprising the base sections and the arch.
