Canh Tien Tower

Located within the Do Ban citadel area, the Canh Tien Tower is one of the most well-preserved Cham Pa architectural works in Central Vietnam. With its graceful form, soaring like a pair of fairy wings against the sky, the tower is not only a symbol of ancient Cham architecture but also a testament to the flourishing period of the Champa kingdom. Overview of Canh Tien Tower

The tower was built around the late 12th to early 13th centuries, when Do Ban citadel was the Vijaya capital – an important political, military, and cultural center of Champa. The structure features the Binh Dinh architectural style, considered the peak of Cham construction art, with strong, balanced lines while still maintaining softness and sophistication. This was also the period when the Cham people reached a high level of skill in brick-making and stone carving, creating structures of incredible durability.

The most striking feature of the Canh Tien Tower is its soaring height of approximately 20 meters. The tower’s body is square, tapering towards the top, creating a sense of elegance and solidity. When viewed from afar, the overlapping roof layers make the entire structure resemble outstretched wings, hence the poetic name “Canh Tien” (Vietnamese: Cánh Tiên; meaning Fairy Wing). This name not only reflects its external beauty but also expresses admiration for the creative talent of the ancient Cham artisans.

The entire structure is built of red fired bricks, fitted together so tightly that the mortar is almost invisible. To this day, this construction technique remains one of the great mysteries of archaeology. After centuries of enduring the sun, wind, and storms of Central Vietnam, the brick walls have retained their sturdy structure, demonstrating the exceptional technical skill of the Cham people at that time.

The architecture of the Canh Tien Tower harmoniously combines religious and artistic elements. The base of the tower is designed to be robust, with raised ridges running around the body, creating a sense of strength. Four sides of the tower feature false doors, while the main entrance faces east – the direction of the sunrise, in accordance with Cham beliefs. The false doors are decorated with pilasters, arches, and leaf-and-vine motifs, along with many patterns in the Hindu style.

The top of the tower is one of its most distinctive features. The roof levels gradually narrow toward the top, each level having small corner towers that create balance and grace. The interior space of the tower is relatively small, with the central worship hall. Previously, this place housed statues or symbols of deities according to Brahmanism, mainly Shiva – the supreme god in many Cham temples and towers.

Besides its architectural value, the Canh Tien Tower also has special historical significance. The structure is part of the Do Ban citadel complex – the last capital of the Champa kingdom before the region transitioned to the Dai Viet (the official name of multiple Vietnamese monarchies from the 10th century AD to the early 19th century) period. Therefore, visitors can combine a visit to the tower with nearby historical sites to better understand the land that was once the center of the Champa kingdom.

In 1982, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism classified the Canh Tien Tower as a national-level architectural and artistic monument. More than four decades have passed, and the tower still stands majestically in the heart of An Nhon, becoming an indispensable stop for tourists on their journey to explore the “land of martial arts”.
