Linh Ung Pagoda – Son Tra

Nestled against the slopes of Son Tra Mountain and facing the East Sea, Linh Ung Pagoda – Son Tra is one of Da Nang’s most distinctive destinations. Overview of Linh Ung Pagoda – Son Tra

Linh Ung Pagoda – Son Tra, also known as Linh Ung – Bai But, is one of three pagodas in Da Nang bearing the name “Linh Ung.” Construction began in 2004, and the pagoda was inaugurated in 2010. Situated at an elevation of 693 meters above sea level and covering an area of ​​20 hectares, the complex includes the Main Hall, the shrine to the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (Quan The Am), monks’ quarters, lecture halls, a dining hall, guest quarters, the Abbot’s quarters, a library, and a relic tower, alongside smaller features such as the Lumbini Garden, Deer Park, Bodhi Sanctuary, and a statue of the Reclining Buddha.

Past the entrance gate, visitors encounter curved pagoda roofs, a spacious courtyard, rows of Arhat statues, and structures that embody traditional Vietnamese Buddhist architecture. With the lush green forests of Son Tra behind and the vast sea in front, the setting is both majestic and expansive.

Deeper into the grounds, visitors find the Main Hall, one of the complex’s most significant structures. The interior exudes a solemn atmosphere, featuring statues of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, with the central altar dedicated to Shakyamuni Buddha.

A spacious courtyard lies in front of the Main Hall. Rows of Arhat statues line the walkways, each featuring a unique pose and expression. Greenery, bonsai trees, and open courtyards are interspersed with the architecture, ensuring the expansive complex does not feel oppressive or heavy.

In addition to being renowned as the most beautiful, largest, and newest of the three “Linh Ung Pagodas” in Da Nang, Linh Ung Pagoda – Son Tra is famous for housing the tallest Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara statue in Vietnam. Standing 67 meters tall, the statue is the highest in the country; it rises from a lotus pedestal and faces the sea.

Its interior has 17 levels, each with an altar holding 21 Buddha statues, each with a distinct form, expression, and posture, embodying the concept of “Buddha within Buddha.”

From various points along the Da Nang coastline, visitors can see the striking white statue standing out against the mountainside, creating a unique landmark and a distinctive attraction for the city.
