With the urgent task of propagating Marxism – Leninism as well as educating revolutionary consciousness to the masses, in January 1929, the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association of Ca Mau town was established. Hong Anh Thu Quan was one of the first places opened by the association in this cultural struggle movement. This place, true to its Vietnamese name, specializes in selling a variety of progressive books and newspapers published in Saigon at that time.
However, what the imperial authorities did not think of was that the area of the library with books and newspapers was actually a front for the development of the democratic movement. The stopover was not only known as an important meeting place for many patriots but also a place for the activities of the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association of Ca Mau town as well as the Political Organization.
The main purpose of these groups working under the name of the library was to help patriotic youths to be enlightened and at the same time propagate and educate Marxist-Leninist ideology.
Architectural style of Hong Anh Thu Quan
As a house in a row of houses, Hong Anh Thu Quan has a construction area of about 74m² (3.7m wide, 20m long). It is located next to the bustling Ca Mau market on the bank of the Xang canal and has a frontage facing the Northeast. Just the location alone, the library area with the scene of “above the wharf, below the boat” has a strong Southern river architecture.
Completed in the 1900s, the library has an architectural style called the “Asian sleeping house” with 1 ground floor and 2 upper floors. Although it has undergone many renovations and embellishments, the destination still retains its original design style. Inside the library are displayed countless antiques such as books and newspapers promoting revolutionary activities, typewriters, cameras, oil lamps, etc.
Walking around the relic, you will feel like reliving the heroic old revolutionary scene – where the predecessors are gathered around the war table. This historical picture is even more vivid when here, wax models recreating the revolutionary propaganda scene are vividly restored by the library.
