Thung Nham Bird Garden is located in the famous Thung Nham eco-tourism area in Ninh Binh. This is a rare nature reserve that almost retains its pristine, wild beauty, tropical forests, vast rivers, a good place for birds to nest, and the habitat of dozens of rare bird species.
Thung Nham is located in Dong Khe village, Ninh Hai commune, Hoa Lu district. In Vietnamese language, “Thung” is derived from the word valley, which is a low-lying area surrounded by mountains. “Nham” means high, rugged mountains and steep cliffs. Located far from residential areas, not yet affected by humans, Thung Nham is still wild, waiting for tourists to explore.
For many years, Thung Nham bird garden has been famous because it is the largest natural bird sanctuary in the North. This bird garden is also located in the core area of Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex – a World Cultural and Natural Heritage recognized by UNESCO in 2014.
Over many years, hundreds of bird species from all over the world have flocked to live in Thung Nham. The largest number of birds include: storks, herons, teals, kingfishers, red-whiskered bulbuls, etc.
In particular, at Thung Nham bird garden, there are two rare species listed in the Vietnam Red Book: Asian openbill stork and Great hornbill (Earth Phoenix). This is a bird that often symbolizes nobility and virtue, has the power to revive, and brings good luck.
In addition to storks and herons, cranes are one of the common species present in Thung Nham bird garden. They and other wild birds live here all year round, in winter, only a small number migrate to the south. The majority live in the reserve and thrive when spring and summer come.
Early every morning, flocks of birds spread out everywhere to find food. In the afternoon, they return to their nests in Thung Nham. The endemic birds here are precious wild animals, creating biodiversity for the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex.
The natural birds in Thung Nham are very close to humans. Therefore, visitors can visit near their habitat every day but they are not afraid.
With its location hidden deep among the overlapping mountain ranges forming a limestone wall to shield against the wind, Thung Nham bird garden is known as an ideal “home” for many species of birds.
To get to Thung Nham bird garden, there are only two roads by land and by water. By land, visitors will pass winding roads right at the foot of the mountain next to the water. When observing the bird valley, you have to stand from above. Traveling by water, visitors can sit on a boat to admire the majestic mountains before reaching the bird garden. Upon arrival, visitors can enjoy the living space of birds on the tree branches right next to the boat.
In addition to visiting Thung Nham, many tourists have combined visiting But Cave and Vai Gioi Cave, masterpieces that nature has bestowed upon the ancient capital of Hoa Lu.
But Cave is about 500m long, famous for its magnificent scenery thanks to its system of stalactites and stalagmites with many different shapes.
Vai Gioi Cave is also a famous masterpiece in Thung Nham with an area of up to 5000m2, located on a majestic mountain. To get here, visitors need to go through nearly 500 winding steps hugging the mountainside. The unique feature of Vai Gioi Cave is the layers of sparkling stalactites. Legend has it that there are three floors here symbolizing the three realms: “Heaven, Earth and Hell”.
