Chong Promontory is a scenic natural spot where the sea and mountains meet… The promontory rock formation consists of large rocks stacked on top of each other for centuries. For a long time, this rock formation has been a popular tourist attraction in Nha Trang.

Overview of Chong Promontory

Chong Promontory (Vietnamese: Hòn Chồng; Hòn means promontory; Chồng means husband) looks like a work of a giant who has put several massive rocks together. It forms a small crescent-shaped bay with a marble peninsula of massive rocks layered atop one another.

A cluster of rocks offshore serves as a natural wave breaker. This area is a naturally stacked rock beach, and nearby are Vo (Wife) Promontory and Nha Trang Bay.

The scenery in Chong Promontory is picturesque. Mountains, sea, and shore lie side by side. Unlike the beaches along Tran Phu Street in the center, the beach in the Chong Promontory area is quite peaceful. Here, visitors can sit on the rocky outcrop and fish, or move a few dozen meters inland to swim on the smooth, gently sloping sand.

The seawater is clear and calm. Offshore, large and small islands surround the area, reducing wind speed and the impact of storms. Therefore, Nha Trang Bay and the Chong Promontory scenic spot are considered among the most beautiful and safest bays.

The Legend of Chong Promontory

There are many interesting folk tales surrounding the legend of Chong Promontory. The strangest is that on a large rock located on the highest point of Chong Promontory, there is a giant handprint deeply etched into the rock, complete with palm and five fingers, as if in the early days of mountain formation, before the rock had hardened, a giant hand had grasped it, leaving its mark to this day.

Regarding this rocky outcrop, local people tell a story about a giant who once set foot here to build mountains and create what is now Nha Trang Bay. One day, while the giant was fishing, a large fish bit his hook and pulled him away. He had to pull it back, holding the fishing rod in one hand and leaning on the rock with the other for leverage, which pressed his hand into the rock, leaving the mark we see.

According to another legend, a young man once came to this place to admire the scenery. He encountered a group of fairies bathing, and while he was captivated by their beauty, he accidentally slipped and fell. He quickly grabbed onto the mountain, causing the side of the mountain to collapse, sending rocks tumbling down and leaving his handprint on the rock.

Locals also say that on the rocky beach, there is a rock shaped like a person sitting and looking towards Co Tien Mountain. Legend says that it was the youngest fairy, still lingering in the beauty of the mortal world and not yet wanting to return to heaven, who transformed into this mountain. These mountain ranges are now developed for tourism and known as Bai Tien (Fairy Beach).
