Da Bac island is one of the wild and unique natural destinations of Southern Vietnam. Considered a pearl in the middle of the sea, Da Bac is a place that creates a majestic picture, combining fine sand, blue sea and large silver rocks.

Da Bac is an island cluster in Kinh Hon hamlet, Da Bac commune, Ca Mau province. From a distance as far as the main land, one can see the magnificent sight of Da Bac island which look like a “magical rockery” in the middle of the vast ocean. Named Da Bac because there are many granite rocks stacked on top of each other around, creating unique and impressive shapes. From afar, the island looks like it is covered in silver, sparkling under the sunlight.

Da Bac comprises three islet named Ong Ngo, Troi, Lon (Da Bac) connected by beautiful bridges. Da Bac island was formed 180 million years ago (belonging to the Middle Jurassic – Mesozoic) with a total area of nearly 6.5 hectares.

Departing from Ca Mau ward to Da Bac island tourist area, it takes 1 hour and 30 minutes by car or motorbike along the road to U Minh Ha National Park, passing Co Xang and Coi Nam, there is a bridge leading from the mainland to the island. If one choose river way, from Ca Mau ward, take a boat a long Tac Thu canal, go west to Hoi Dong Thanh canal, sail for 40km more to reach Da Bac Commune.

Da Bac island still preserves its primitive forests and vegetal cover. It is no wonder why coming here, tourists may hear the rusting of leaves all year round. Atop Da Bac island, tourists can figure out the fishermen amid rugged rocks from afar. This rustic landscape is attracting more and more people to the island.

Ong Ngo islet, where you set foot right after crossing the 400m bridge over the sea connecting the mainland to the island, has the beauty of wild primeval forest, towering mountains, and a coastline surrounded by foaming waves.
In addition to Troi islet, which has a small area, the other two islets are formed by rocks stacked on top of each other. The highest peak on Lon (Da Bac) is 50m above sea level. Da Bac islet is sheltered, creating a beautiful, safe bay, peaceful natural landscape, and fresh air.

Different granite layers make up strange forms with such exotic names as San Tien (Fairy Yard), Giang Tien (Fairy Well), Ban Chan (Fairy Foot) or Ban Tay Nam Ngon (Five-fingered Hand). In San Tien stand the stele and statue of victory.

Atop of Da Bac island is Nam Hai temple dedicated to the cult of whale. Inside the temple, there is a giant whale skeleton (about 14m long, 4m wide), displayes and records the mysterious story of the whale saving people in distress at sea. On the 23rd day of the 5th lunar month every year, local fishermen, those fishing far offshore hold the festival of whale procession in the temple.

The strange thing is that in the middle of the ocean, on a small island full of rocks, the ancient banyan and bodhi trees still grow green, lush and full of life, still preserving patches of forest and rare primeval vegetation.

After a busy sightseeing day, tourists can enjoy marine specicalities, including shrimps, crabs or oysters which are cheap yet delicious. The service is not yet well developed but tourist can still feel convenient.

Da Bac now is a well-know eco-tourist attraction in Ca mau. Visitors come there to relax after exhausted working days.
